Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has weighed in on Virat Kohli’s return to T20Is, suggesting a new role for the star batter. With Kohli set to make his first T20I appearance since the T20 World Cup 2022, Chopra believes that Kohli should open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma, citing Kohli’s unique style that involves taking some time to settle at the crease.
Chopra emphasized Kohli’s ability to score at a rapid pace, particularly during the powerplay overs, stating, “Even in T20s, he rarely starts hitting fours and sixes from the first ball. He takes his time. If he has to run at a strike rate of 150, he does that in the powerplay.” According to Chopra, this approach could be especially effective on pitches in New York or the West Indies, where there are more scoring opportunities in the early overs.
Regarding the complexity of India’s batting lineup, Chopra expressed his preference for Suryakumar Yadav to bat at number three. He highlighted Yadav’s status as the number-one ranked T20I batter in the world and suggested that accommodating him at number three would provide him with the time needed to impact the game effectively.
Chopra’s insights provide an interesting perspective on Kohli’s potential role in the upcoming T20Is and shed light on the strategic considerations surrounding India’s batting order.
