David Warner

David Warner brought down curtains on his illustrious Test career in style as Australia thrashed Pakistan by eight wickets in the third AUS vs PAK Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground to win the three-match series 3-0.

The veteran opener scored an entertaining fifty in his final Test innings to guide Australia to a win one last time. Chasing 130 runs to clean sweep the series, Australia were off to a poor start. Opener Usman Khawaja departed even before opening his account. He was trapped in front by Sajid Khan for a six-ball duck.

However, Marnus Labuschagne and Warner did not let make Pakistan further inroads in the game. They shared a decisive 119-run stand for the second wicket to all but seal the win for their side. Warner completed his 37th and final Test half-century off just 56 balls and was looking destined to end his career in a fairytale style by hitting the winning runs.

However, Sajid Khan struck again to dismiss Warner when Australia were just 11 runs short of the win. Warner walked off the field in Tests for the last time to a standing ovation. His final Test knock ended for 57. The knock came off 75 balls and was studded with 7 fours. Labuschagne, who remained unbeaten on 62, and Steve Smith then scored the winning runs to complete another dominating win for their side.

AUS vs PAK: Pakistan’s innings

Earlier in the game, Pakistan were bowled out for just 130 runs in the second innings of the third AUS vs PAK Test. The momentum was with them on the third day when they bowled out Australia for 299 runs to take a slender 14-run lead. However, it did not take the visitors long to throw away the advantage and the momentum, as they did on numerous occasions in the recently concluded series.

They ended day three on 68 for 7. Mohammad Rizwan and Aamer Jamal began the proceedings with the bat on day four. Both the players had done well with the bat in the first innings and Pakistan’s chances of posting a competitive target were still alive. The duo started positively too, denying Australia any quick wicket.

They added 41 runs in 13 overs on day four of the AUS vs PAK third Test before departing in quick succession. Nathan Lyon broke the stand by dismissing Rizwan for 28. Three balls later, Pat Cummins dismissed Jamal to leave Pakistan reeling at 109 for 9. Six runs later, Lyon struck again and dismissed Hasan Ali to end Pakistan’s innings for 115.

AUS vs PAK: Brief score: Australia 299 & 130/2 (Marnus Labuschagne 62, David Warner 57; Sajid Khan 2 -49 ) beat Pakistan 313 & 115 (Saim Ayub 33; Josh Hazlewood 4-16) by eight wickets.
