Former India opener Aakash Chopra has questioned England‘s commitment to the ICC World Test Championship (ICC WTC) after they struggled to improve their dismal over-rate.
England are currently languishing at the eighth spot in the WTC Points Table with only Sri Lanka placed below them. While the Ben Stokes-led side has won two, lost two, and drawn one Test so far in the ongoing WTC cycle, they have managed to accumulate only 9 points due to a staggering 19-point deduction.
They faced a points deduction during the five-Test Ashes series against Australia last year. They failed to complete their quota of overs in time in four of the five Tests. They fell short by two overs in the first Test, nine in the second at Lord’s, three in the fourth at Old Trafford, and five in the last Test at The Oval. As a result, they ended up with only 9 points instead of 28 points despite winning two and drawing one game.
Aakash Chopra slams England:
With England failing to improve their over-rate in the ongoing first Test against India as well, Aakash Chopra has slammed them for their attitude. With spinners operating in tandem, the visitors had the opportunity to complete their quota of overs in time but they failed to do so.
On the second day of the Test, they bowled 87 overs despite operating with four spinners for most of the day. Disappointed with their performance, Aakash Chopra, on Saturday (January 27), took to X to criticize England, writing:
“England are -19 points for the slow overrate in the current WTC cycle. You’d assume that they’d try their best to finish on time…whenever it is possible.
“Playing 4 spinners and getting only a handful of overs from Wood was a good opportunity. Nopes. They were behind the overrate yesterday too. Do they really worry about the WTC, one wonders!!!”

Talking about the ongoing game, England were bowled out for 246 runs in the first innings with Ben Stokes scoring 70. For India, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked up 3 wickets apiece while Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah took 2 each. In reply, India scored 436 runs.
