Cricket maestro Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his support for the inclusion of star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s T20 World Cup squad, emphasizing their outstanding performances and invaluable fielding skills. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently unveiled the schedule for the much-anticipated T20 World Cup, slated to commence on June 1, with the USA and West Indies jointly hosting the tournament.
Gavaskar lauded Virat Kohli’s exceptional form over the past 1.5 years, particularly highlighting his stellar performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, where Kohli emerged as the tournament’s top run-scorer with an impressive 765 runs in 11 innings. The former Indian captain expressed confidence in Kohli’s limited-overs batting prowess, underlining the batsman’s consistency and three centuries in the 2023 World Cup.
Fiielding Prowess and Seniority
In addition to their batting prowess, Gavaskar emphasized the significant contribution of Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the field, labelling them as “great fielders.” The cricket legend believes their fielding abilities would be a valuable asset for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup. Furthermore, their seniority and experience in high-pressure situations were noted as additional factors in favour of their inclusion.
“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still great fielders and will be of great help on the field,” remarked Sunil Gavaskar, underlining the holistic impact the duo can bring to the team beyond their batting capabilities.
Rohit and Kohli’s last appearance in T20Is for India was in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Australia. Subsequently, India’s T20I vice-captain Hardik Pandya assumed the leadership role in the format. However, with both Kohli and Rohit making themselves available for the upcoming 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting on January 11, it signals their intent to return to the shortest format ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Group Stage Opponents and Key Clash
The T20 World Cup features 20 teams divided into four groups, with India placed in Group A alongside Ireland, the USA, Canada, and arch-rivals Pakistan. The much-anticipated clash against Pakistan is scheduled for June 9 in New York, promising to be a high-voltage encounter in the group stage.
As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the T20 World Cup spectacle, Gavaskar’s endorsement adds to the growing excitement surrounding the potential return of Kohli and Rohit in India’s quest for T20 glory.
