The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai hosted the 14th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) between the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday, April 1.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the toss and as expected elected to bowl first in the match. They made one notable change to their bowling unit as Sandeep Sharma, who was unfit, made the way for Nandre Burger in the playing XI.

The decision to have a go with the ball turned out to be excellent for the visiting team as the star left-arm pacer Trent Boult made the Mumbai batters dance to his tunes. Trent Boult dismissed Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir for golden ducks on the 5th and 6th ball of the first over of the innings.

MI were forced to bring in Dewald Brevis ahead of the second over as an impact player. Nandre Burger came to bowl the second over and he bowled some brilliant lines and lengths but wasn’t able to pick any wickets. Then, Trent Boult came again and dismissed Brevis for a golden duck in the third over while Ishan Kishan was cleaned up by Burger for 16 in the 4th over.

The MI captain Hardik Pandya had to come out to bat early and he had a huge responsibility on his shoulders. Pandya didn’t disappoint as he decided to play counterattack innings and took the RR bowlers to the cleaners. His partnership of 56 runs in 36 balls with Tilak Varma helped Mumbai Indians (MI) stage a comeback in the game.

That was when RR skipper Sanju Samson introduced his best bowler Yuzvendra Chahal into the attack and the latter repaid the faith of his skipper by sending back Hardik Pandya to the dugout for 34 runs in the 10th over.

After that, nothing went in MI’s favor as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were restricted to 125/9. The only two batters to score more than 20 runs for MI were Hardik Pandya (34) and Tilak Varma (32). For the visiting team, Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up three wickets whereas Nandre Burger and Avesh Khan shared three wickets between them.

During the run-chase, the Wankhede crowd was fully charged up and they were behind their team. Kwena Maphaka took Mumbai Indians off to a flyer by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first over itself.

Also, Jasprit Bumrah was handed the new ball in the match but he wasn’t able to do much as Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson played cautiously against him. As other bowlers were unable to get wickets, Akash Madhwal finally got the breakthrough for his team by dismissing Sanju Samson in the 5th over. He followed it up with the wickets of Jos Buttler and Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the end, Riyan Parag batted brilliantly and continued his red-hot form to steer his side to an amazing 6-wicket win. Parag smashed 54 runs off 39 balls, with 5 fours and 3 sixes, and helped Rajasthan Royals hand Mumbai Indians their third consecutive loss in IPL 2024.
