Former wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel dismissed the notion of an end of the road for players like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara in Indian cricket. Parthiv Patel highlighted the frequent comebacks in cricket, stressing the significance of scoring in the Ranji Trophy.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were dropped from the Test squad, despite their previous experience playing red-ball cricket in South Africa. The selectors have chosen to back Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer for the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively.

Pujara remained a regular member of the Indian Test team until being omitted from the squad for the series against the West Indies. Over the past four years, the 35-year-old has maintained an average of less than 30 in 28 Tests, with just one century to his name.

Meanwhile, Rahane returned for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. He registered a noteworthy performance in that match, scoring 89 and 46. The 35-year-old managed to score only 11 runs across two innings in the series against the West Indies.

There Is Never An End Of The Road – Parthiv Patel

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Parthiv Patel underscored the significance of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season as a crucial opportunity for players to showcase their abilities.

“There is never an end of the road for any player in Indian cricket. We’ve seen a lot of players making a comeback, and we know Ajinkya Rahane, being a former captain, and Cheteshwar Pujara, playing 100 Test matches, he has done really well for India,” Parthiv Patel told Cricbuzz.

“There is a full Ranji Trophy season happening from January. It’s all about scoring runs, and if someone gets injured, you still can get that opportunity. So until you retire, there is not the end of the road for anyone, especially because of the kind of players Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have been for India,” he added.

In 103 Tests for India, Pujara amassed 7195 runs at an average of 43.61, with 19 centuries to his name. Meanwhile, Rahane, with 85 red-ball matches for India, scored over 5000 runs at an average of 38.46, notching up 12 centuries in his cricket career.

India To Face South Africa In First Test On December 26

The Indian team has faced challenges with injuries in their pursuit of their first red-ball series victory in South Africa. Mohammed Shami and Ruturaj Gaikwad are ruled out due to respective injuries, while Ishan Kishan has withdrawn from the series citing mental fatigue.

The selectors have chosen KS Bharat and Abhimanyu Easwaran as replacements. Notably, Pujara and Rahane were not even considered as replacements for the batting roles. However, no announcement has been made regarding a replacement for Mohammed Shami.

The first Test match between India and South Africa is scheduled to commence at Centurion on Tuesday, December 26. The second and final match will take place in Cape Town from January 3 to 7.
