Former Indian cricketer Parthiv took a did at Team India head coach Rahul Dravid after he all but confirmed that KL Rahul will keep the wickets team in South Africa Tests. The former keeper-batter wasn’t happy with the decision.
The Test series between India and South Africa will begin from 26th December in Centurion. All the eyes will be on the visitors about what combination they will be playing in the game. It will be an opportunity for them to script history and win their first-ever Test series on South African soil.
Coming to the wicketkeepers, India have two in KL Rahul and KS Bharat. The latter was added to the team after Ishan Kishan pulled out of the series, citing mental fatigue. Bharat is unlikely to get the opportunity especially with Rahul being there.
Indian head coach Rahul Dravid also all but confirmed that KL Rahul will be keeping wickets in the two games. This will for the first time, the keeper-batter will be donning gloves in the longest format of the game. He played as an opening batter until now and it will also be the first time he will bat in middle order while doing the wicket-keeping duties.
Parthiv Patel didn’t like the idea of KL Rahul keeping wickets in the Tests for the South Africa series. He pointed out that in Test matches, the team should’ve preferred the keeper who does the role regularly in the Ranji Trophy. Taking to his X account, he explained:

KL Rahul has been keeping wickets for India in the ODIs and it’s fair to say that he has done that role exceptionally well. He was the team’s keeper in the World Cup 2023 as well and his heroics behind the stumps was lauded by many including the coaches of the team.
KL Rahul displayed magnificent work behind the gloves in the tournament and what was impressive was his DRS calls. He made almost every call correct and his calmness behind the stumps was one of the major reasons behind his success.

Indian head coach while talking about KL Rahul keeping in the Test against South Africa said that it will be an opportunity for the batter to do something different. He highlighted the amount of hard work he has put in and added that keeping to pacer bowling will ease him into the role. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
“It’s an exciting challenge. It’s an opportunity for him to do something different. With Ishan unavailable, we had a couple of keepers to choose from. Rahul is very confident about giving it a go. We understand that he hasn’t done that quite often (in the longest format), but he has done it in fifty overs, and even that is tough.
“He has done a lot of keeping in the past five-six months. One of the things here is that there is more pace bowling than spin, which will ease him into the role. We will see how it goes. It is nice to have someone like him, someone who has the ability with the bat and keep.”
KL Rahul was last seen in action during the ODI series against South Africa. He captained the team and guided them to a 2-1 win in the three-match series.
