As the year 2023 is about to end, former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan were asked about their best Indian team moment of the year. The year 2023 has been an absolute blast for the ‘Men in Blue’ with a few ups and downs and heartbreaks. The Indian team reached the top of the table in every format whereas they lost the final against Australia of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.
The 2023 Asia Cup win was also a top moment for the Indian cricket team this year as they remained ruthless throughout the tournament except for the defeat against Bangladesh in the Super 4s stage. It was Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj who blew away Sri Lanka in the final of the tournament and wrapped them up for 50 runs.
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar also believes that India’s win in the 2023 Asia Cup was the best moment for him in the year 2023. Gavaskar stated that beating Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka was not easy.
Irfan Pathan and Sunil Gavaskar name Team India’s ‘breakout’ moment of 2023
Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports, “The biggest Team India moment for me was the Asia Cup championship because beating Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is not easy. Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final were the second highest winners, India were just one win ahead of them in the Asia Cup. So, now to go even one win further, I think was an exceptional performance.”

However, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan felt otherwise and believed that the ‘breakout’ moment for the Indian team in the year 2023 would be the ODI World Cup. Pathan stated that until the finals, no one would have thought that India would lose the match. India defeated teams dominantly and scarily.
Irfan Pathan said, “I think the World Cup will remain the best moment, the World Cup will remain because until the final came, no one believed that the Indian team would lose the final. In that manner, they were defeating all the teams by intimidating them, whether you talk about South Africa, whether you talk about England, even the way they defeated Australia in the first match, they defeated them in a completely convincing manner. I think if we talk about breakout performance, it was the World Cup except for one match.”
The Indian team displayed a marvelous performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup as they had won 10 out of 10 games ahead of the final and were just one win shy from leveling Australia’s massive ODI World Cup record of 11 consecutive wins.
However, Australia played better in the CWC 2023 final and it was Travis Head again who took the final match away from the Indian team just like the WTC Final.
With the year 2024 approaching, the Indian team will be featuring in the T20 World Cup and will want to win it after 2007. India lost to England in the semi-final of the previous T20 World Cup and now it might be a young Indian team who play the biggest ICC T20 event without big names such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
