Saturday, 31st December, one year after the horrendous car crash suffered by India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals released a video based on the timeline of his injury and recovery. Rishabh Pant’s car hit a divider on the Delhi-Roorkee highway on December 31, 2022. The left-hander received serious injuries but was lucky enough to somehow escape from his burning car, thanks to the timely help given by a passerby.

Rishabh Pant’s injury was severe enough to keep him out of the game for a long time and it has been one year since he has stepped onto the field to play competitive cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter has been recovering at the NCA and has missed out on a lot of cricketing action since his injury including the World Test Championship Finals and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Axar Patel who is Rishabh Pant’s teammate and close friend has now shared some new details about the “fateful” accident which has kept Pant away from the game for a year now. He revealed that he received a call from his sister asking for Rishabh’s mother’s number and his sister said that he had been involved in an accident.

“Subah 7 ya 8 baje mere phone pe ring baji. Pratima di ka phone aya. Pratima di ne mujhe pucha ki ‘teri Rishabh se kab baat hui thi last?’ Mene bola ‘nahi, kal karne wala tha lekin kal nahi ki mene’. ‘Are uski mummy ka number ho toh mereko send kar, uska accident ho gaya hai’. Matlab pehla thought mere ko aaya ki ye bhai gaya.”

“(Early morning I got a call from sister Pratima. She asked me when did I talk to Rishabh Pant last. I told her that I was about to talk to him last day but I did not. Pratima said that she needed Pant’s mother’s contact number as the player had met an accident. At the first time, I thought he was gone),” said Axar in a video uploaded by DC showing the timeline of Pant’s accident and recovery.

Rishabh Pant is recovering well and is expected to take part in the IPL 2024. He would be leading the Delhi Capitals this season and was also at the DC Table during the auction. As he is recovering from his injuries, he opened up about how lucky he feels he is that he survived an accident of that magnitude. Rishabh Pant also said that the first part of the recovery was the most challenging.

“The kind of accident I had I am lucky to be alive. The first part of recovery was so challenging with lots of pain but now recovery is going well,” Pant said in a video posted by the IPL on X.

“More from a physical point of view because in the starting there was a lot of pain to be endured. But just looking forward to the journey till now. I think it’s been going really well from a recovery point of view.

“I felt like I couldn’t face people and all, and I felt like I had to do something which gives me confidence and I wanted to support my team at the same time because I’ve been playing for them. I love my team all the way, so I wanted to show my support even in the worst times. So that was the idea and I think it’s part of the recovery process.”

Rishabh Pant is likely to return in IPL 2024 and will be leading his side. However, coming back to the game after a year and a half is not easy and he might not be at his best. Rishabh Pant has been the first-choice wicketkeeper for India especially in Test cricket and in his absence, India has struggled to find a destructive keeper-batter in the red-ball circuit. His last appearance in competitive cricket was in December 2022 when he played the Test series against Bangladesh.
