MS Dhoni sprung a huge surprise by stepping down as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) just before the start of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). On Thursday (March 21), CSK announced that the legendary cricketer has relinquished the captaincy and has been replaced by Ruturaj Gaikwad.
This is the second time MS Dhoni has given up CSK’s captaincy and will be hoping that things unfold in a better manner this time. He did for the first time in 2022 when Ravindra Jadeja replaced him as the captain. Jadeja failed to impress as a captain and MS Dhoni had to take charge of the team mid-way through the competition as CSK finished at the ninth spot in the points table.
With no added pressure of captaincy, MS Dhoni will be eyeing a productive campaign with the bat. IPL 2024 could be his last season in the IPL as a player and he would be looking to bow out on a high. And even before taking the field for the first game of IPL 2024, MS Dhoni has started receiving praise from all around for a heartwarming gesture.
A video of the former CSK skipper has gone viral in which he could be seen helping the support staff carry a box off the field.

The fans will be desperate to see MS Dhoni in full flow with the bat in IPL 2024. The former India skipper struggled with a knee injury in IPL 2023 and managed to face only 57 deliveries. He underwent surgery and is has fully recovered now.
MS Dhoni’s record as CSK captain:
MS Dhoni is one of the most decorated captains in the history of the IPL. He was leading CSK from the very first season of the tournament in 2008. Under his captaincy, CSK won a record-equaling five IPL titles. In 2011, CSK became the first team to defend the IPL title.
CSK finished outside the top four in the IPL just twice in 14 seasons under Dhoni’s captaincy. They reached the final of the tournament a record 10 times, including four consecutive years, from 2010 to 2013. He also led CSK to two titles in the now-defunct Champions League T20.
