Australia opener Usman Khawaja opened up about his childhood memories with David Warner. He said that his opening partner was a terror as a kid and revealed a hilarious anecdote from their younger days.
David Warner and Usman Khawaja share a great camaraderie between them. The duo has grown up together as they went to the same school and used to play together. Who would’ve thought that time they would’ve open innings for Australia in future.
David Warner and Usman Khawaja have been the backbone of Australia in the Tests for a while now. But this partnership is set to be broken now as the former has announced his retirement and will be playing his last game in whites this week.
David Warner will be retiring from the Tests after the last Test against Pakistan, which will be played at his home ground in Sydney from 3rd January. He would be keen to end his career on high and give his fans something to cheer about in his last game.
Ahead of the game, David Warner’s long-time friend Usman Khawaja shared a story from their childhood. He revealed how his mate used to stain the clothes of other kids with cherries, knowing that it would not be easy to clean. Speaking to Fox Cricket, he explained:
“Davey was an absolute menace. He was a terror as a kid honestly. One of the stories I bring up all the time that I love was we used to have tea time and he always gravitated towards the cherries. He is a smart man and he knows those cherries stain.
“So we would pick up a cherry and chuck it at other people and teammates and the mum’s would be blowing up at the end of the day because they couldn’t get these cherry stains off. It is impossible to get cherry stains off.”
Off the field, he is one of the most giving people – Usman Khawaja on David Warner
The veteran opening batsman further talked about the off-field nature of Warner. Khawaja said that Warner is ‘one of the most giving’ personalities and he spends a lot of time just chatting around with random people. He also said that Warner’s off-field nature is very different and one won’t believe he is an all-time great cricketer. He elaborated:
“Off the field he is one of the most giving people I have ever met. He sits down with random people all the time and just chats to them like an everyday Aussie bloke. You would have no idea that he is a Test cricketer and one of the greats of the game. He is the first person I see whether it is family or friends, he is like what do you want? I will get it for you. What do you need? I will do this or that for you.”
The 37-year-old asserted that David Warner is the first person he remembers whenever he finds himself in a difficult situation and the opener is always ready to help. Khawaja elaborated:
“If I was ever in trouble he would be one of the first people I would call because I know he would be the first one to answer and the first one to help me out.
“He is that kind of guy and that is the side you don’t see of him and he doesn’t show that to a lot of people, so people just see what they see on the field and make up their minds, which is fair enough. But you don’t know the real David Warner behind the scenes. He can be quite rough even off the field, but deep down inside there is a really good human in there.”
Usman Khawaja has delivered a decent performance in the ongoing three-match Test series against the Shan Masood-led Pakistan. In the Perth Test, Khawaja scored 41 and 90 while in the Melbourne Test, he registered the scores of 42 & 0.
He would be aiming to finish off the Test series on a high and help his team register a clean sweep over the visitors. Also, Khawaja would be hopeful of stitching together a great partnership with David Warner for the one last time in Test cricket in the Sydney Test.
