The Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 saw table toppers Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers clashing with each other on Wednesday (10th January). The 32nd match of the tournament took place at the Gabba in Brisbane and it saw hosts winning the game comfortably and extending their winning streak.

Brisbane Heat won the toss and opted to bat first. They didn’t have a great start with the bat as they lost both the openers Usman Khawaja (14) and Colin Munro (3) early. But after that, Marnus Labuschagne (45) and Matt Renshaw (18) played handy knocks that brought the team back into the game. 

After that Sam Billings (37) added a vital hand before Michael Neser (64*) played a sensational knock down the order to take the team for the big total of 191 runs. Ashton Agar was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 2/29. Whereas Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, and Lance Morris also chipped in. 

Perth Scorchers didn’t have a great start with the bat. Openers Zack Crawley (13) and Sam Whiteman (16) got out after starts. They were reeling at 40/2 when skipper Aaron Hardie and Josh Inglis joined hands and tried to bail the team out of trouble but the captain couldn’t get as too perished early for just 14 runs. 

But Josh Inglis (28) and Laurie Evans (51) after that put Brisbane Heat under immense pressure and added 48 runs for the partnership. With the way they were batting, it seemed that they would take their team home. But Brisbane bowlers made a staggering comeback and picked wickets in no time. 

Brisbane Heat bundled out Perth Scorchers for 168 runs to win the game by 23 runs. Micheal Neser, Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson, and Paul Walter picked two wickets each. Whereas Matthew Kuhnemann bagged one scalp and helped the team to win.

There wasn’t any change in the points table of BBL after Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers. Heat solidified their top position and are the only undefeated team in the tournament. Perth Scorchers despite loss are second. Sydney Sixers are followed by Melbourne Stars. Whereas Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades are 7th and 8th on the table.

Xavier Bartlett is the leading wicket-taker in the BBL 2023-24. He bagged the top spot with 15 scalps to his name. Paul Walter climbed to the second spot with 12 wickets. Jason Behrendorff also moved up while Daniel Sams was pushed down. Jamie Overton bagged the 5th spot.
