Virat Kohli surpasses MS Dhoni in unique list after ICC ODI Team of the Year 2023 announcement

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been included in the ICC ODI team of the year 2023 after he had a splendid year with the bat in Test and ODI cricket. He and Rohit Sharma have been a part of the ODI team with many other Indians. 

Kohli who missed the first T20I against Afghanistan pulled out of the first two Test matches due to personal reasons. The  BBCI in a statement said that Kohli had informed the board and also the skipper Rohit Sharma about his position. 

The board further clarified and requested the fans of Indian cricket to respect Kohli’s privacy. While a section of the Indian fans seem to have sympathy towards Kohli. The other half seems to criticising him. In Kohli’s absence, the BCCI is yet to find an able replacement. The team will be led by Rohit Sharma who is also a part of the ICC ODI team of the year 2023. 

“Virat has spoken to Captain Rohit Sharma, the team management, and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention,” BCCI said in a statement.

“The BCCI respects his decision and the Board and team management has extended its support to the star batter and is confident in the abilities of the remaining squad members to step up and deliver commendable performances in the Test series. “The BCCI requests the media and fans to respect Virat Kohli’s privacy during this time and refrain from speculating on the nature of his personal reasons” the BCCI statement further read.

Virat Kohli Tops Elite List Among Indian Cricketers

Kohli is now a part of the ICC teams across formats more than any other Indian player in world cricket. He has been nominated in ICC teams 14 times which is the current most among Indian players. MS Dhoni has been named in ICC teams 13 times, followed by Rohit Sharma 8 times. Former Indian batters Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag have been part of ICC teams seven and six times respectively. Ravichandran the ace Indian spinner has been a part of ICC teams 5 times, followed by Jasprit Bumrah 4 times.

Meanwhile, England have also named a 16-member squad with batter Harry Brook pulling out of the series at the last moment due to personal reasons. Dan Lawrence has been named as his replacement. There are doubts over skipper Ben Stokes’ fitness before the first Test. A final call on his availability will be taken before the match. 

England will play 5 Test matches against India. The first match of the series will be played in Hyderabad from January 25, 2024. The second match will be held in Vizag from February 2. Rajkot will host the third match of the series from February 15. The fourth match will start on February 23 in Ranchi. The fifth and final match of the Test series will be held in Dharamsala from March 7, 2024. England have lost the last two Test series played in India in 2-16-17 and 2021.
