Pragyan Ojha Predicts India’s Openers For T20 World Cup 2024

Former Indian left-arm off-spinner Pragyan Ojha was all praise for young Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal for his splendid knock of 68 off 34 balls to help India double their lead in the 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan and move towards a whitewash in the 3rd T20I in Bengaluru.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had to miss the 1st T20 due to a slight injury he sustained in the morning of that match. As a result, Shubman Gill walked out to open with Rohit Sharma but the duo did not get going at all. It was Gill who led to the dismissal of his skipper for a 2-ball duck after not responding to Rohit’s call for a single. He kept looking at the ball instead of turning back and running towards the other end.

Then after Rohit’s departure, Shubman Gill only showed sparks but could not convert it into something big. He smacked 5 fours and scored 23 runs before taking a very immature decision of stepping out to Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s googly with wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz completing a neat stumping.

Gill’s inning sparked a lot of reaction from former cricketers with many even stating that he doesn’t deserve to be in India’s T20I setup. And to everyone’s expectation, Gill was dropped for Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the latter upon his return, did not fail to leave an impression.

He displayed his attacking prowess right from the very first over of Fazalhaq Farooqi, hitting a boundary before Rohit Sharma departed for a golden duck. Yashasvi Jaiswal would then stitch a 57-run partnership with Virat Kohli who left the crease after a 16 ball 29 run blitz.

But there was no stopping Jaiswal. He infused his aggressive nature with proper textbook cricketing shots that pleased the eyes of everyone watching the game at Holkar last night. The 22-year-old maintained a scary strike rate of 200 and he was on for something very big before Karim Jannat’s delivery took a slight nick off his bat for a simple catch to Gurbaz.

“He Showed Maturity Along With Striking Ability..” Pragyan Ojha Opines On Yashasvi Jaiswal

Nonetheless, that blistering innings from Yashasvi Jaiswal has made him a serious contender to be picked for the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup later this June in the USA and West Indies. Former spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed that Jaiswal knows there are very few tickets (spots) left for the World Cup and his intent showed that he is hungry for that spot.

“The way he batted, the pace at which he played, the confidence he showed, he showed maturity along with striking ability. He wasn’t leaving the game. He was taking the game forward. He scored a huge percentage of the team’s runs.”

“It shows his hunger. He knows very few tickets are available for the World Cup. If you have to get that, you will have to play like this and it’s extremely important that you finish the game as well.” – Pragyan Ojha concluded.

Meanwhile, in the 3rd T20I against Afghanistan, Rohit Sharma’s men will aim to round off their last T20 series before the World Cup by ensuring a whitewash at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on January 17.
