Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) featured in the 7th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) against the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Tuesday, March 26.

Gill turned lucky at the toss and he invited CSK to bat first in the match. His bowlers did start off well and allowed the Chennai Super Kings batters to play an attacking brand of cricket. Both Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad looked confident in the middle and they launched an attack on the GT bowling unit.

Both the openers scored 46 runs but the Kiwi star registered his runs at an explosive strike rate of 230 while the CSK skipper was considerably slow with his scoring rate being 127.77.

Up next in the middle were Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube and the latter played his natural attacking cricket from ball one. Despite Rahane being slow and eventually getting dismissed for 12, Dube continued his batting masterclass and slammed a 22-ball fifty.

Also, Daryl Mitchell ( 24 off 20), Sameer Rizvi (14 off 6), and Ravindra Jadeja (7 off 3) came up with decent contributions to help the Chennai Super Kings post 206/6 on the board in their 20 overs.

Chasing the target, Shubman Gill got dismissed for 8 off 5 balls. After losing their skipper, it looked like, the Gujarat Titans batters lost their hopes and they weren’t able to play good innings.

The likes of Wriddhiman Saha, Sai Sudharsan, and David Miller had a big responsibility on their shoulders to take the game deep for their team but all of them disappointed with their performances.

The strong lower-order of Gujarat Titans consisting of Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rahul Tewatia got dismissed for 1, 11, and 6. The visitors were bundled out for 143/8 and CSK won by 63 runs.

“They outplayed us when we were batting, their execution was spot on” – Shubman Gill

Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Shubman Gill lauded Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for being spot-on with their execution. He said:

“They outplayed us when we were batting, their execution was spot on. We backed ourselves to get a decent score in the powerplay and once we didn’t, we were always playing catch-up. It was unfortunate for us.”

Shubman Gill added that they were confident of chasing around 200 but failed miserably. He also said that the match would serve as a great learning experience for bowlers. Shubman Gill said:

“In T20 you can always talk about 10-15 runs here or there, end of the day it’s about how much they got. On this wicket, we were expecting to chase 190-200. I think it’s a great learning for the bowlers. I think it’s better to have this kind of game early on in the tournament rather than in the middle or late. We always expected to chase 190-200, it was a really good wicket. Felt like we let ourselves down while batting.”

Talking about his captaincy, Shubman Gill said that he is learning a lot of new things and flaunted GT’s past glory. He said:

“(On captaincy) Lot of new learnings, new experiences and different things. It’s exciting to captain a team like Gujarat Titans, we’ve made it to the finals in the last couple of years so very exciting.”
